The Algonquin name Worm Moon references earthworm activity in thawing ground. Other names include the Crow Moon (crows cawing signals winter's end), Sap Moon (maple sap begins flowing), and Crust Moon (snowmelt refreezes into a crust overnight). In Anglo-Saxon tradition, this was the Lenten Moon — a time of fasting and preparation. Lunar eclipses have inspired awe and terror throughout human history: ancient Chinese believed a dragon was devouring the moon; Norse mythology described the wolf Hati catching and swallowing it. Wiccans generally see eclipses as potent portals for transformation — the temporary "death" and "rebirth" of the moon mirrors the death-rebirth cycle central to the Craft.

When the moon begins to darken (entering Earth's shadow), sit quietly and watch the transformation happening in the sky. As the moon goes dark or turns red, close your eyes and visualize the thing you wrote down dissolving, breaking apart, transforming. When the moon begins to re-emerge from the shadow, burn the paper safely in the dish. The old pattern is consumed. Watch the moon return to full brightness — you return with it, changed. If the eclipse is not visible from your location, track the timing and perform the meditation by candlelight.

It shows you the truth you have been avoiding. Accept it. Embrace your shadow. As you integrate it, the cavern fills with red light — the blood moon above. Rise back to the surface, carrying the shadow's gift. The moon emerges whole. So do you.
