Ostara

The name Ostara comes from the Venerable Bede's 8th-century account of the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre, whose month "Eosturmonath" fell in April. While some scholars debate whether Bede was recording genuine folk tradition or speculating, the association between spring equinox celebrations and fertility imagery is universal across cultures. The coloring of eggs traces back thousands of years — decorated ostrich eggs have been found in African graves dating to 60,000 years ago. In the modern Wiccan calendar, Ostara was formalized by Gerald Gardner's Bricket Wood coven in the 1950s. The sabbat celebrates the Young God's growth and the Goddess's transformation from Crone back to Maiden. It mirrors the astronomical fact of equal day and night, a balance point from which light now dominates.

Wiccans celebrate Ostara by decorating eggs with magical symbols and burying them in the garden for fertility, or placing them on the altar. Seed-blessing ceremonies are popular — charging seeds with intention before planting them. Many practitioners create an Ostara altar with spring flowers, painted eggs, images of hares, and pastel candles. Balance rituals are common, acknowledging the equal dark and light before choosing to step into the growing light. Some covens perform the "Meeting of the God and Goddess" ritual, where the Young God encounters the Maiden in the greening world. Hot cross buns have Pagan origins as offerings marked with solar crosses. Gardens are blessed, new magical projects begin, and spring cleaning continues from Imbolc with added vigor.

The Vernal Equinox occurs when the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north, placing it at exactly 0° Aries in tropical astrology. Day and night are approximately equal in length (the word "equinox" derives from Latin aequus nox — "equal night"). In 2026, this occurs on March 20. This is also the moment the astrological new year begins. After the equinox, the Northern Hemisphere receives more direct sunlight each day until the Summer Solstice. Hard-boil an egg and let it cool. With markers or natural dyes, draw or write symbols of what you want to grow this spring — a heart for love, a coin symbol for prosperity, a book for learning, whatever calls to you. Hold the egg in both hands, close your eyes, and pour your intention into it. Then bury the egg in the garden or a pot of earth. As it breaks down, it nourishes the soil — your intention feeding new growth. Plant a seed directly above it if you like.

Balance and Renewal Equinox Rite

Cast circle at dawn if possible. Call quarters emphasizing the threshold nature of the day. Set up altar with equal black and white candles. Invoke the God as Young Lord of the Greenwood and the Goddess as Maiden returned from the underworld. Perform a balance meditation — acknowledge what remains from winter (shadow) and what emerges with spring (light). Ceremonially extinguish the black candle. Bless seeds on the altar by passing them through incense smoke (air), candle flame (fire), salt (earth), and water. Each participant states what they plant in their lives. Feast on eggs, honey cakes, and spring greens. Close circle.

Meditation

Stand at the threshold of a great door. Behind you is winter — respected, complete. Before you is a sunlit field. Step through. Feel your feet on warm earth. A hare leads you to a hidden nest of painted eggs — each one holds a message for your spring. Pick one up and see what is written on it.
