The short answer: Mercury isn't actually moving backwards. It's an optical illusion caused by orbital mechanics. But the traditional significance attached to these periods is real in the sense that it's been observed and documented for over 2,000 years, and many practitioners find the timing framework genuinely useful.

Mercury orbits the Sun faster than Earth does — it completes an orbit in about 88 days compared to our 365. Several times a year, Mercury "laps" us on its inner track.
