Mabon

The name "Mabon" for the autumn equinox is relatively recent in Wiccan usage, coined by Aidan Kelly in the 1970s. The underlying harvest celebration, however, is ancient. The Welsh tale of Mabon ap Modron appears in the Mabinogion, where the divine child is imprisoned in Annwn (the Otherworld) and must be found and freed by King Arthur's men. This myth of descent and return mirrors the Greek story of Persephone — who returns to the Underworld each autumn. Harvest home celebrations, where the last sheaf of grain was gathered with ceremony, are documented across Britain and continental Europe from medieval times. Michaelmas (September 29) was the Christian overlay. The equinox itself has been marked by cultures worldwide — the pyramid of Kukulcán at Chichén Itzá creates a serpent shadow at both equinoxes, and Japanese Buddhists celebrate Higan at the autumn equinox. In Wiccan practice, Mabon is the "Witch's Thanksgiving."

Wiccans celebrate Mabon with harvest feasts featuring seasonal foods: apples, wine, grapes, root vegetables, nuts, and game. Apple magic is prominent — apple-bobbing is actually a form of divination, and slicing an apple horizontally reveals the pentacle hidden in the core. Balance rituals echo Ostara but with a darker tone, acknowledging that shadow now overtakes light. Many practitioners create a "gratitude altar" piled with harvest goods, then ritually give some away — to food banks, neighbors, or the earth. Nature walks to observe the changing leaves, gathering seeds for next year, and preserving herbs and foods connect the practitioner to the actual seasonal reality.

The Autumnal Equinox occurs when the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading south, entering 0° Libra in tropical astrology. In 2026, this happens on September 22. Day and night are again approximately equal, but now the trend reverses from Ostara — after the equinox, nights are longer than days and will continue lengthening until the Winter Solstice. The rate of daylight loss is at its maximum around the equinox, with days losing 2–3 minutes daily at mid-latitudes. The Sun's noon altitude is declining, and shadows lengthen. Astronomically, this is the exact mirror of the spring equinox.

Apple Pentacle Divination

Light a candle. Take an apple and carefully slice it horizontally through the middle (not top to bottom). Look at the cross-section — you will see a five-pointed star (pentacle) formed by the seed chambers. This natural pentacle has been a source of wonder for thousands of years. Hold the apple halves and think about your harvest this year: what grew well? What didn't? Eat one half mindfully, tasting the sweetness of the season. Bury the other half in the garden as an offering to the earth, returning the seeds. Write in your journal about what you are grateful for and what you are ready to release as the dark season begins.

Cast circle at sunset. Call quarters with autumnal items: acorns (North), feathers (East), red candle (South), chalice of wine (West). Invoke the God as the fading Harvest Lord and the Goddess as She who prepares to descend. Build a gratitude altar — each participant places something representing their harvest upon it. Perform a balance meditation with equal light and dark candles. The Priestess dramatically removes her crown or veil and descends (sits/kneels) symbolizing the Goddess's journey into the Underworld. Libate wine to the earth. Share the harvest feast: apples, bread, wine, root vegetables. Each participant names what they sacrifice as the Wheel turns. Close circle.

Meditation

You stand in an orchard at sunset. The trees are heavy with fruit, leaves just beginning to turn gold. A door appears in the trunk of the oldest apple tree. The Goddess stands before it, looking back at you. She places an apple in your hand, then turns and walks through the door into darkness. You are left holding the apple in the fading light. What does it mean? What must you release to honor the turning?

Technical Notes

Exact equinox timing is calculable. Sun entering 0° Libra is powerful for balance work, justice magic, and relationship assessment. Moon in water signs deepens the emotional/descent aspects of the ritual. The equinox to Samhain period is ideal for shadow work, ancestor contact, and preparation for the dark half. Wine consecrated at Mabon can be stored for use at Samhain and Yule — it carries the harvest energy forward.
